Things to do in Yungay: a 3-day itinerary of history, lakes and garden

Three days are enough to feel Yungay: one to walk its history, one for the mountains and one to slow down. This is a flexible plan you can shuffle depending on the weather and your energy.

Day 1 · History and the plaza

Morning. Arrive unhurried, settle in and walk to the Plaza de Armas (about 8 minutes on foot from Comtury). Huascarán and Huandoy are visible from there. Have a coffee and wander through the market.

Afternoon. Visit the Yungay Campo Santo, the memorial above the old town. Go unhurried and in silence; it is one of those visits that changes a trip. Come back to the garden before dark.

Evening. Fire pit and dinner in the grill area, under clear skies if the weather helps.

Day 2 · Llanganuco Lakes

Set out early for the Llanganuco lakes (Chinancocha and Orconcocha) inside Huascarán National Park. Bring layers, sunscreen, a hat, water and snacks. It is a mountain day: stop at the park entrance and ask about conditions before heading out.

If you are well acclimatised and want a challenge, Laguna 69 is one of the Cordillera Blanca’s most famous hikes: a full day and demanding. Read our guide to acclimatising first.

Day 3 · A slow day in the garden

After the mountains your body will welcome a pause. One idea:
