One reason to start your trip in Yungay is the altitude: about 2,450 m above sea level, far gentler than the lakes and mountain passes that come next. The Llanganuco lakes are above 3,800 m and Laguna 69 is around 4,600 m. Going up unprepared is the classic recipe for altitude sickness.
This guide is general advice and does not replace medical advice. If you have any health conditions, check with your doctor before travelling.
What helps you acclimatise
- Arrive with margin. Ideally spend at least one or two nights in Yungay before the higher excursions.
- Hydrate. Drink water often, even when you are not thirsty.
- Eat light the first night. Simple meals, nothing heavy.
- Skip alcohol for the first 24 to 48 hours.
- Climb gradually. A day of gentle walks around town and the gardens before a high day.
- Sleep low. Sleeping lower than the day’s excursion helps your body.
Warning signs
A strong headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual breathlessness or extreme tiredness can signal altitude sickness. Do not keep climbing: descend and rest. If symptoms get worse, seek medical care.
A calm first day
Walk to the Plaza de Armas, chat with locals, rest in the hammocks and let your body adjust. If you feel like it, a yoga or meditation session is a good way to breathe deeply and slow down.
